Steve Whitmill - the works!

Recap, new stuff and what to expect

I have been writing for about 5 years, and now have 4 poetry books, two teenage novellas, one adult novel, one thriller novel and 4 short play collections – all published.

In the pipeline is a novel based on the intelligence services, more plays and more poems! so watch this space. I continue to get my inspiration from children, holidays, atmospheric places and the weather, although the multi-faceted aspects of human nature, behaviour, and emotions are woven into the words I use. Additionally, my professional background as a mental health nurse will be seen and felt coming through in much of my work. My literary influences are many: Spike Milligan, Alan Ayckbourne, Dylan Thomas, Joe Orton, Tennessee Williams and John Osbourne – to name but a few.

My poetry deals with childhood, angst, tenderness and resolution. Many readers comment that they can relate to the words used. The novellas deal with good old adventure themes and are aimed at 11-16 year olds, while my bestseller ‘White Coat Conspiracy’ is a tale of intrigue, love, and investigation into goings on in a 1960’s mental hospital.

Hi, ‘ presented my work at a local care home today, as a member of  Northants Authors Group ‘

My short plays typically last for 30 minutes to perform or read, and are of two acts usually. I have had ‘A Poisonous Revenge’ performed as a side-play at Moulton Theatre and next year Kingsthorpe and Abington Libraries (in Northampton) will embark on a programme of play readings – starting with ‘Ham and Eggs’. I now have over 50 plays to choose from! They are ideal for people wanting to dip their toes into drama and who have never acted before or for those who don’t want a full blown commitment.

Additionally, I provide poetry recitals in local care homes in the area.

I have been lucky enough to have had the pleasure of working with (and acting for ) the PlayHouse Theatre, Moulton Theatre, and Masque Theatres in Northampton and have benefitted from the knowledge and expertise of Phil Welsh, Corinna Leeder, Kezabelle Ambler, Steve Dimmer, and Carl Peach. I also acknowledge the inputs from Lawrence Butterfield, Philip Burditt and Andy Wheatley who have helped me on my writing journey.

More Information.

I live in Northampton and have a strong interest in the promotion of young people in writing and drama, and have worked with local schools to encourage this. They are our future! Additionally, I have been lucky enough to use the skills of student artist’s to provide the covers and illustrations for my novellas.

Additionally, I am a member of the Northants Authors Group – which seek to promote our books at book and craft fayres locally:
